Having a webcam is not an unusual thing nowadays. That's because web cameras have become extremely advanced, while their price got lower and lower. But even having the most advanced HD webcam doesn't solve a problem, and that's having a video displayed or the desktop instead of the actual webcam video. Fortunately, this problem can be solved through software applications. A program that can display video files or the live desktop as a webcam is Fake Webcam. It's a virtual webcam that can be used with almost any software that supports webcam broadcasting, like Yahoo Messenger or Skype.

When running Fake Webcam for the first time, it will ask the user to enter his email address. Without doing this, the software will not be able to work. After completing this step, one will be left with an interface which consists of a graphical toolbar and a preview window. Loading one of the many video formats supported by Fake Webcam into its interface will display a preview of the video. Thus, the user will know exactly what he is playing.

Besides loading multiple video files, Fake Webcam supports displaying the desktop in real time. This feature is useful for showing a bug to a program producer or just for showing a certain piece of information to someone, for example, a desktop wallpaper or application window. The options section of Fake Webcam allows setting the frame rate that will be used for playing the video.
